AIA Monthly Traffic Update – April and May Preview 2020

April 2020 Monthly traffic update and May 2020 preview -97.5% Auckland Airport total passenger volumes decreased by 97.5% in April 2020 versus last year. International passengers (excl. Transits) were down 96.5%, transit passengers were down 98.5% and domestic passengers were down by 98.6%. Key Points: o The decline in total passengers for April 2020 reflects the impact of the travel restrictions imposed by the New Zealand Government in response to Covid-19. April 2020 was the first full month impacted by the closure of the New Zealand border from March 20 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. In addition, New Zealand entered Alert Level 4 lockdown from March 26 until April 27 when it moved down to Alert Level 3. However, during Alert Level 3 domestic air travel was still restricted to essential services only. May 2020 Monthly traffic update preview -94.7% Auckland Airport total passenger volumes decreased by 94.7% in May 2020 versus last year. International passengers (excl. Transits) were down 98.0%, transit passengers were down 98.3% and domestic passengers were down by 91.1%. Key Points: o The decline in total passengers for May 2020 reflects the impact of the travel restrictions imposed by the New Zealand Government in response to Covid-19. The closure of the New Zealand border from March 20 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents has had a significant impact on international services. o On 14 May 2020, New Zealand entered Alert Level 2 and Air New Zealand began increasing domestic capacity towards its target of 20% of pre-Covid-19 capacity during Alert Level 2.
